Rotti scared of canary

Hi all I have a situation that I need help with.

I have assisted a friend by taking his cannery into my home while he is on holidays for two weeks (we are on day 2). And his chirping is gorgeous!!

We were thinking of getting one and thought this would be a great trial. Only issue is my rotti boy Jazzy is scared of it. When he chirps he either tries to curl up in a ball on you or behind you etc or runs outside.

I know when we moved into our new house we had a dodgie smoke alarm which would beep and go off. Which we removed. This has scared our boy a tad as he will go outside when we make toast but with the canary chirping he is not liking it. I know I can move her into the other bedroom while we are at work and times during the day but I really want him to get use to this bird.

He is 9years old and we don’t have kids but we will be planning a family soon which kids toys make noise. I’ve tried treats and he doesn’t want them as he is to stressed. So I’m a tad lost at the moment.

Can anyone help me at all I am lost…

Hi Victoria,
Many dogs are anxious or unsure around new things/noises… and the older a dog is the more set in their ways they are and new things are more scary (just as older people tend to worry more than younger ones do!).

I would guess that your Rottie will adjust to the noise of the canary – given time. It’s really just a case of letting him become familiar with the noise, and movement, of the bird.

Over time he will realize that the bird won’t hurt him, and his anxiety will ease.

Don’t try to push him to get close to the cage, or even stay in it’s vicinity, when he’s scared. Just let him take his own time to adjust and I really think it will be fine.

Best of luck! ~ sue
