I have a wonderful 5 year old neutered male Rottweiler. He is my second Rottweiler; I love the breed. I’m considering adopting another neutered male Rottweiler. My dog is relatively well trained and gets along with most other dogs. He has shown aggression to 2 other dogs who initiated aggressive behavior towards him first.
I don’t know much about the dog that I’m considering adopting. He is at the local animal shelter where I volunteer, appears to get along with other dogs, and was surrendered by a family who claimed they didn’t know he’d get so big.
I’ve spent time with him at the animal shelter and he exhibits all of the typical lapdog behaviors of the male Rottweilers that I have known. Would it be mistake to have 2 males?
Hi Mary
Having two adult males together, even if they’re both neutered, could be a problem. So could having two adult females together. Generally it’s best to have two dogs of the opposite sex.
BUT, it depends greatly on the personality and temperaments of both dogs involved, and there’s no way you can tell for sure one way or the other without them spending time together.
Before committing to this I would suggest introducing them on neutral ground (you’ll need a friend or colleague to help you with this) and see how they get along. Then if that works out okay, perhaps you could bring this second Rottie into your home on a ‘trial basis’ for a couple of weeks and evaluate how it works on your home turf!
In my opinion that’s really the only way to know whether or not this is a situation that can work or not. Hope it helps and that things go the way you hope they will. Good luck.
